The series' title character, Adèle Blanc-Sec, lives in a semi-realistic Paris around the time of World War 1. She is an author and a journalist who encounters spiritism, crime, and occultism, and she deals with various sorts of odd beings such as crazy scientists, freaks, and surreal monsters. The series can be perceived as a light-hearted parody on fiction elements that were popular in its time.

The full title of the series is Les Aventures Extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec.
