MAIN STORY

The series premiered in 1959.

Barbe-Rouge takes place between 1715 and 1750 and it partly based on historical pirates roaming the 7 Seas. The character of Barbe-Rouge (means Redbeard in English) is a pirate captain of French origin who is primarily seeking his fortunes in the Caribbean onboard his ship Faucon Noir (Black Falcon). According to a later spin-off series his given name is supposed to be Jean-Babtiste Cornic.
It is astonishing to realize that Barbe-Rouge is not present in all the albums, whereas his adopted son, Eric Lerouge (means The Red although he is blond!), plays a starring role in the entire series, which in reality makes him the main character. Eric's given name is Thierry de Montfort, and he is an uncharacteristic pirate in several ways; he is a nobleman, he is a scholar - and he dislikes pirate life...
