The series starring the
character of Sweeney started sporadically in the
Sunday newspapers in the mid 1940s, but,
confusingly, under the title of Buz Sawyer
(see below). In the same period of time the
character of Sweeney slowly disappeared from the
Buz Sawyer daily comics.
This is the story of Sweeney, a poor
family man, who lives a both rural and suburban
life: Sometimes he earns a living as a farmer,
sometimes he tries to make ends meet on door-to-door
sales. And occasionally he takes adventurous
trips on his own to sunny islands!
The character of Sweeney is in fact
taken from Crane's wartime comic Buz Sawyer,
in which he served as a comical sidekick and
gunner in Sawyer's naval airfighter.
