The series unfolds in North Carolina's rugged mountain range populated by hillbillies, who spend most of their time gossipping, feuding, moonshining, and avoiding the long arm of the law.

The character of Snuffy Smith was originally found in the series Barney Google, but he quickly became so popular that the series changed title to Barney Google and Snuffy Smith. Later the title was shortened to Snuffy Smith.
