Personal dates: Born 1912 in Holland. Died 2005 in Ireland.

Successors: During his lifetime Toonder turned over much of his activities to his own Toonder Studios who carried on with his creations.
Comments: Toonder has been named the Dutch Disney because of his many funny animal characters.

MAIN STORY

The series premiered in 1938 as a book series and in 1941 as a newspaper series.

This is the story about the lily-white cat character Tom Poes and his self-assertive bear friend, proprietor Olivier B. Bommel. The plots partly take place in the small community where they live and where they also have to fight off incoming threats from shady people. Basically, the two main characters are presented to a certain problem, whereupon we experience their reaction - and solution - to same problem.

The origin of the name Tom Poes is a phonetic play on word; the Dutch pastry Tompouce is pronounced likewise.
The full title of the series is Tom Poes en Heer Bommel.
