The series premiered in
1952. Stopped in 1962 after 57 issues.
In the beginning the title character
was a screwballish and selfrighteous woodpecker
with little regard for others, and he was always
in a happy mood. As time went by he got rounder
and mellowed somewhat.
The series is based on an animated
short cartoon series that ran from 1940 to 2002.
Also, the character starred in two TV shows (1957-1997
and 1999-2002).
